Clients who have an approved Mental Health Care Plan or Eating Disorder Management Plan are entitled to a rebate for approved sessions.
Currently, individuals can claim for up to 10 sessions per calendar year under a Mental Health Care Plan issued by a referring doctor such as a GP.
Those with an Eating Disorder Management Plan can claim up to 40 sessions per calendar year issued by their GP. -
Health Funds have different structures and covers available so it is advised that clients discuss their individual entitlements with their fund. Clients are able to obtain an invoice to present to their Health Fund to obtain a rebate following individual sessions.

Individuals can choose to come for an appointment without a referral. However, in order to obtain a Medicare Rebate individuals will require a Mental Health Care Plan or an Eating Disorder Management Plan from their GP or referring doctor.

The amount of consultations will depend on the presenting issue and background. In general, most people require 6 to 8 sessions. Some individuals may need only a few sessions, whilst others may require longer term support.

On your first visit you can expect your psychologist to identify what your primary concerns are and what you would like to gain from sessions. Your psychologist may also discuss aspects of your referral and your overall background information in order to better assess and understand your presenting issues and plan your treatment.
